A NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER
If you know me, you’ll know that as a summer baby, the winter months can be such a struggle for me. Maybe this is you too, or perhaps you love the fresh, cold winter months. For some reason, November seems to be the toughest winter month of them all. The autumnal colours have gone, it’s cold, the shorter days are making it harder to get outdoors, and Christmas is far too early to get excited about.
Turning November Around
This year, instead of hiding away and hoping for November to be over, I decided to create a November to Remember. I began to wonder: what would make November 2024 a month to remember? Would it be remarkable because it was nice, naughty, nourishing, or in nature? Then I thought - why not all of the above?
I created a list of activities that I might want to experience throughout November. It became a sort of adventure menu…
The Power of Spontaneity
I decided this month could involve acts of spontaneity, committing to a new experience, and trying simple things I’d always fancied, like:
Reading a book I’d always meant to.
Trying new tastes in food.
Watching a different style of movie.
Going somewhere new.
I also onboarded a friend to join me in this challenge. Together, we inspired each other and kept the challenge alive. I’m grateful to say it turned out to be a joyful, energising, and memorable month—straight from the heart.
What Made My November Memorable?
Doing something adventurous or new every day isn’t always possible, but I noticed that my month became more intentional. I felt more connected to myself, in charge of my experiences, and, most importantly, I laughed and lived a little more.
My November Adventure Menu
Here are some of the activities that made my month remarkable:
Became a joiner’s assistant – I’m hoping to get promoted to installation manager soon! 🤞🏽
Signed up for a comedy course – I’m planning to do 5 minutes of stand-up comedy at Laurells in Whitley Bay next week.
Took up kickboxing for fitness.
Read a paper – It’s been years since I made time for that.
Turned a business meeting into a sea dip and campfire collaboration – It was supercharged and heartwarming.
Hosted a World Café event.
Taught sixth-form students how to pack a mental fitness kitbag at a local high school.
Wrote a letter to someone important I’d lost connection with.
Put myself out there for a TEDx talk.
Went wilderness cycling in rural Scotland – Fresh snowfall, cold air, and wild winds blowing me uphill made for an unforgettable experience.
The Science Behind a Memorable Month
Behind this month of winter adventure lies some clever science relating to health and happiness.
The Benefits of Learning and Stretching Yourself
Mental agility: Research shows that learning new things keeps neurons firing and helps combat dementia.
Happiness boost: Stretching beyond your comfort zone, achieving something you thought was impossible, and engaging in activities that make you smile all contribute to overall happiness.
What Would a Memorable Month Look Like for You?
Would it involve:
Noticing the good in people around you and complimenting them?
Spending quality time with loved ones?
Taking up a new hobby?
