Adventuring is good for you!!

Polly, a white woman, is walking away from the camera on a grassy path. It's a foggy day and she's surrounded by fir trees.

We associate adventuring and play with childhood and it’s my belief that it remains an essential ingredient of a happy, healthy adulthood and especially into older (wiser) age.

The Benefits of Adventuring Throughout Life

Adventuring keeps us mentally as well as physically strong, agile, and vibrant. Based on research (The American Journal of Play) we should adventure through our whole lives and I wholeheartedly agree.

1. Strength and Agility

Adventuring makes you stronger. Moving and activating our bodies keeps the muscles, and joints agile. Most of the fittest people I know in their 50s and 60s still play and take an adventurous approach to how they spend their free time.

2. Mental Sharpness

Adventuring makes you smarter. Opportunities to learn lessons arise when we play. For me it’s often about re-learning things that I’ve always known but don’t take to heart often enough like pacing myself so I can achieve more & celebrate my successes, and that sleep is my superpower.

3. Problem-Solving Skills

Adventuring helps you solve problems. Life is full of surprises, and obstacles which are impossible to predict. Adventuring makes us more responsive to the curveballs life throws at us and more able to solutionise in other areas of life. How I overcome the discomfort of cold water swimming or tackle hills on my bike remind me of my resilience to deal with the challenges of being a business owner.

4. Boosting Creativity

Adventuring boosts creativity. The flexibility and free-spiritedness of outdoor adventures keep our creativity thriving. I have my best ideas when I’m in the fresh air surrounded by trees and I find clarity and make strong decisions when I’m open water swimming.

5. Stress Reduction

Adventuring reduces stress. Stress is inevitable in life, but too much stress makes us feel unhappy and can impact our health, relationships, and ability to think clearly. Our recreational time is the perfect chance to reset ourselves and a way to buffer life stress.

6. Building Resilience

Adventuring builds resilience. The capacity to bounce back from setbacks is crucial to success. Some call it grit. But how do we develop these habits of tenacity?

7. Fostering Relationships

Adventuring helps you make friends. Finding like-minded people and experiencing activities and moments together connect us and create new allies. I found my beach family through Sol's cold water therapy (look him up), and every Sunday morning doing breathwork and playing in the waves gives me a feeling of belonging to a clan.

And finally… Adventuring is fun, free, and good for you!!
